Join Nathan Hoff for A Voice from the Sacristy. We are in ordinary time and the gospel reading is from Mark 3.20-35. Having just chosen those he desired to follow him (3.13-19), Jesus experiences unchosenness—rejection. His family thinks he needs an intervention, the religious guild thinks he is on enemy team. I think this is Mark’s way, in narrative form, of saying what John reports Jesus saying in one verse: you did not choose me, but I chose you (John 15.16).
Listen to the end and participate in a short form of lectio divina from Colossians 3 (MSG).
Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life—even though invisible to spectators—is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you’ll show up, too—the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.
